An exhibition of queer art by local artist Nathan Chenery that focuses on our shared identity as ‘other’ and questions assimilation over acceptance.

Monday 23 – Friday 27 February: Awareness-raising display

A display highlighting important LGBT figures from the past, changes in attitudes through time and support networks that exist today.

Tuesday 24 February: The double-glazed glass ceiling – lesbian role models in the workplace

Influential lesbian women from Stonewall, Aviva and the NHS will talk about their experiences at work and in the community, followed by optional drinks and networking.

Tuesday 24 February: The changing Church of England: developing attitudes towards LGBT+ issues and ministry with LGBT+ Christian youth

Reverend Sally Hitchener will talk about her personal experiences, the Church’s changing attitudes, her work supporting young LGBT Christians and acting as a spokesperson for the Church on social issues.

Tuesday 24 February: The rise and fall of Polari – Britain’s gay language

The talk discusses the rise and fall of Polari – a secret form of language used mainly by gay men and lesbians in the UK in the 20th century – and asks if it will ever come back.

Wednesday 25 February: The Well of Loneliness or the depths of despair? An evening with Radclyffe Hall

Celebrated York writer Fiona Shaw will host an evening of debate with three panel members around the novel’s place in the literary canon and its potential to speak to a contemporary audience.

Thursday 26 February: Go York lecture – Rikki Arundel

Trans activist and inspirational speaker Rikki Arundel will deliver an LGBT History-themed lecture as part of the Go York series.

Thursday 26 February: Reading group

The monthly L-Lit: York Lesbian Reading Group event, this time exploring The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood.

Thursday 26 February: Do us proud: the York LGBT History Month 2015 closing event

The month’s official closing event will see an exciting variety of spoken word and poetry from a diverse line-up of seven LGBT performers and one ‘token’ straight cisgender.

Saturday 28 February: York’s LGBT history: make your own rainbow plaque

People are invited to add to York’s seventy-plus blue plaques that commemorate famous people or events with special temporary rainbow plaques, marking places of personal significance and political importance.

Saturday 28 February: Queer art now (and then)

Local artist Nathan Chenery will talk about what is happening in queer art now and how it differs and has evolved from what came before it.

Ynda created York LGBTQ+ History Month in 2014 while working at York St John University. They then developed it into an independent organisation, and served as Lead Coordinator from 2014 to 2016, which included overseeing its registration as a charity. They remain loosely involved from a distance, mostly helping with web updates. During their seven years in York, Ynda also studied at both of York’s universities and served periods as secretary of York Pride and York LGBT Forum. They also founded Non-binary London and are the DJ coordinator at the queer cabaret event and community Bar Wotever at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern.
