York LGBT History Month 2017: Week One!

It’s finally here: the York LGBT History Month programme begins today!

This week we have six fabulous events to get you started, from church services to zine-making. Don’t miss our official launch night this Friday: join us for a fun evening out featuring a quiz, a bar and live music!

UYLC LGBT History Month: Emily Brothers | Talk

To kick off LGBT History Month, UYLC is delighted to be hosting Emily Brothers, who stood as Labour’s parliamentary candidate at the general election in Sutton and Cheam. Emily is the first openly transgender parliamentary candidate of a major party for parliament. A passionate campaigner for LGBTQ+ and disability rights, Emily has also worked at the Equality and Human Rights Commission, the Disability Rights Commission and the RNIB.

Celebrate the start of York LGBT History Month 2017 with a fun evening out. Our launch night will feature a quiz, a bar (cash-only) serving soft and alcoholic drinks, live music, films and speeches – plus an opportunity to network with local LGBT organisations and councillors. “Pride of Place” pinning event | Personal histories

Pride of Place is a Historic England project which uncovers and celebrates places of LGBTQ heritage across England, ranging from the frontiers of Roman Britain to the gay pubs and clubs that remain important in our lives today. Come along to share your stories of places around the country with hidden LGBT history, and “pin” them on the Pride of Place online interactive map.

Elevenses at Barley Hall | Social

Drop in for light refreshments at Barley Hall, a reconstructed medieval townhouse in the centre of York. After indulging in a hot or cold drink and some LGBT-themed cake, you will be free to explore the museum, including its fantastic display of costumes. The event is free, but there will be a collection raising funds for the ongoing work of York LGBT History Month.

Celebrating LGBT history | Service
