Call for events for 2019!

At York LGBT History Month we are now starting to compile our programme for February 2019. As ever, we need your help to make it happen!

Last year’s programme featured over 40 events with a great diversity of subjects and voices represented. Previous programmes have included a very broad range of events including craft workshops, discussions, exhibitions, films, plays, performances, exploration and commemoration of personal histories, religious services, social occasions (with and without alcohol), talks and more. We want to continue to bring a fabulous programme of local events and activities for the people of York and beyond. Could you be a part of this?

The theme for LGBT History Month 2019 is History II: Peace, Reconciliation, and Activism, celebrating the official end of the First World War and marking the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. We aim to inspire a new generation and build alliances to ensure the significant gains of the last 50 years are not lost, by producing an interactive event programme that is open to all.

As always we welcome submissions to the programme regardless of whether they are on theme, and regardless of whether they provide a historical perspective. For inspiration, see the 2018 programme on our events page and the 2014-2017 programmes on our previous years page.

If you’d like to put on an event, here’s what we need from you by Friday 30 November:

  1. date
  2. start time
  3. end time
  4. venue
  5. accessibility (audio description; baby changing; BSL/English interpretation; gender-neutral toilets; hearing loop; wheelchair access)
  6. organisation(s) responsible (if applicable)
  7. title
  8. description (maximum 500 characters, with spaces)
  9. tickets (cost, if any, and how to get them)
  10. contact name
  11. contact email*
  12. contact phone*
  13. website/page for more information (optional)
  14. image for the programme (optional)

* By default we will include both your email and phone number in the programme to make it easy for people to contact you. If you do not want one of these listing, please let us know.

Please submit your events using our online form. If you have trouble using the form, you can email us the details instead.

We encourage you to get in contact before setting a time and date – if we can minimise clashes, we can enable people to make the most of the month and maximise attendance at each event! For now please try to avoid the daytime of Saturday 2 February and the evenings of Friday 1 February and Thursday 28 February.

Unsure about an idea for an event? No matter how big or small, quirky or conventional, we’d love to hear your ideas and are happy to act as a sounding board, provide advice and point you in the right direction as much as we can.

A final note: if you have any photos from this year’s events, we’d be grateful to receive them!

Ynda created York LGBTQ+ History Month in 2014 while working at York St John University. They then developed it into an independent organisation, and served as Lead Coordinator from 2014 to 2016, which included overseeing its registration as a charity. They remain loosely involved from a distance, mostly helping with web updates. During their seven years in York, Ynda also studied at both of York’s universities and served periods as secretary of York Pride and York LGBT Forum. They also founded Non-binary London and are the DJ coordinator at the queer cabaret event and community Bar Wotever at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern.
